Dr. Dan’s Rx

Family Man

Dan Benishek wears many suits, and all of them with integrity and pride.

Dr. Dan Benishek and his wife, Judy, currently live in Crystal Falls. They have five children and three grandchildren.

Dan was born in Iron River, Michigan. His father worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and then in the iron mines of Iron County. Dan's father died in a mining accident in 1957 and Dan’s mother, with the help of family, raised Dan and his brother, Tim.

Growing up, Dan worked in the family business, the Iron River Hotel. It was there that he first learned valuable lessons about fiscal responsibility that have driven his philosophy in Congress. No family or business can spend more than they take in for very long - and the same is true with government. Our government is endangering the prosperity of future generations.

Dan is an avid hunter and fisherman and a proud member of the NRA and the GOA. Prior to being sworn into Congress on January 5, 2011, Dr. Benishek had never sought nor held any previous public office.

Doctor

Dan graduated from West Iron County High School in 1970. Dan went on to earn a B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan in 1974 and graduated from Wayne State Medical School in 1978.

Dan completed a Family Practice internship in Flint at St Joseph's Hospital. He completed his General Surgery residency back at Wayne State in Detroit. He has served as a general surgeon in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in a private practice since 1983. He has worked part-time at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain for the past twenty years.

One of Dan's reasons for running for Congress was that with his background as a physician, he knew first hand just how disastrous President Obama's healthcare bill would be for our country. Dan believes in repealing the president's plan, and replacing it with a patient-centered model. Only then can we truly improve healthcare outcomes, and help rein in costs.

Congressman

Dan’s service in Congress is based on four core principles:

Read It. Dan actually thinks it’s crazy that this should even need to be said, but the biggest change you could make to Congress is to make them all read the bills they’re voting on.

Reduce It. We’re on the brink of a financial meltdown that will ruin the nation because Washington won’t stop spending. We can’t leave this debt for our kids to pay back.

Repeal It. The president’s healthcare bill is a mess. It needs to be repealed, and replaced with a patient-centered care model.

Reform It. Out with the career politicians. Dan has pledged to serve only three terms. Out with the special interests. In with the voices of taxpaying American citizens who agree that enough is enough.

Read it. Reduce it. Repeal it. Reform it.

Dr. Dan is taking these simple principles to Washington, D.C. Dr. Dan is a doctor, he’s not a politician. He believes bills must be read before they are voted upon, spending must be reduced, the president’s disastrous healthcare law must be repealed, and Washington’s special-interest driven culture must be reformed.
